The written history of the Europeans shows that Sandwip has been inhabited for more than three thousand years. Sandwip was settled even before the settlement of Noakhali, which was once connected with it. [2] [3] . Sandwip's salt industry, shipbuilding and textile industries were world famous. Being located in the coastal areas of the subcontinent, travelers from different parts of the world used to come to this region to anchor their ships and expressed interest in establishing trade and settlements in this region due to its easy trade system and transportation facilities. According to a report of 18, about 130,000 manas of salt produced in Sandwip was sent to different parts of the country by 300 ships every year. [4] [5]

Sandwip was once world famous for building strong and beautiful ships at low cost. These ships were exported to various parts of Europe. The Sultan of Turkey was attracted to ships in the area and bought several ships from here. [7] [8] Sandwip was a prosperous port in India. Citation needed ] The Portuguese colonized Sandwip in the mid-sixteenth century, attracted by the salt and ship trade, grain resources, and so on. [6] In addition, French and Dutch travelers often came to Sandwip for travel and missionary work. [9] In 1815, Emmanuel Martus, a Portuguese general with 200 troops, was killed in a battle with the Portuguese in the state of Arkan, and in 1818, Magraj captured Sandwip when the Portuguese left Sandwip.[10] Delwar Khan ruled the region for almost half a century, denying their subjugation, despite the dominance of the Arkan and Maghs in Sandwip. His kingdom fell in 17 AD and the zamindari system was introduced under the Mughal government, which was later abolished with the end of British rule. [11] [12] Fascinated by the form of Sandwip, many poets, writers, historians and tourists have come here from time immemorial. Citation needed ] In 1345, the historical traveler Ibn Battuta came to Sandwip. [3] In 1585, the Danish traveler Caesar Frederick visited Sandwip and recorded many of its ancient monuments. [13] On January 26, 1929, Kazi Nazrul Islam, the politician Mozaffar AhmedCame to Sandwip with. [14] [15] Kazi Nazrul Islam composed his Madhubala lyric play against the backdrop of memories of his travels to Sandwip . Sitting in the shade of a tree in Sandwip, Nazrul composed many poems in his Chakrabak Kavyagrantha . [3]

The first peasant revolt in Bengal took place in this upazila in 18 under the leadership of Abu Torab and in 1930 under the leadership of Congress President Kali Keshab Ghosh. In 1977, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman officially started the 6-point campaign for the emancipation of Bengalis from here. In 1971, this upazila was under Sector 1. On 10 May, the Pak army shot and killed many innocent people, including lawyer Jahedur Rahman, in the town of Sandwip, and set many houses on fire and looted. On 6 December Sandwip was liberated.
